Hope, Puja and the Pandemic

Not so long ago, there was a mighty demon called Coronasura. No one had the slightest idea that from the weak idea that we considered him, a being so wicked might emerge. He started off tiny and insignificant. However, he matured fast and this abhorrent demon ravaged the innocent citizens of Urvi, a beautiful place till Coronasura’s uprising. It fed on hope and health and grew its limbs till it had a vast reach. Thousands of people were killed, and the soldiers of Urvi tried their very best to stop him. They banished him from Urvi. But Coronasura was very cunning indeed. He changed his appearance so that the people wouldn’t recognize him, and attacked again. He multiplied and formed minions. By this point, Coronasura seemed ubiquitous. People were losing their jobs and lives, crops were destroyed and hope was a long-forgotten word, let alone a feeling. Nevertheless, hope did come, in the form of Devi Durga. The people started praying to the almighty goddess herself and sought her help in ridding their sweet land of Urvi of Coronasura. (Devi Durga is the feminine epitome of strength. She is depicted in a variety of Vedic literature as a goddess having feminine prowess, power, determination, and wisdom much beyond our material world.) The goddess looked upon the Earth, listening to the cries of her children, her ears ringing with anger. She felt bad for the people because the pain inflicted and the bloodshed was unnecessary and evil. She decided to help them out. She ascended to Urvi and searched for Coronasura. When she found him, with one of her mighty blows, she struck him dead. Goddess Durga, yet again, saved her children when they needed her.

We know that it looks like there is no hope and it seems that after all the front line warriors are doing, the virus might still be too strong for us to conquer. But what we must remember is that there is hope, it’s just that we cannot see it yet. Weren’t we all unsure of whether pujo was going to happen? Yet, it did. In the same way, we must believe in Durga Maa, trust that she will help us out. We will get out of this pandemic. Till then, we need to remain strong and keep the flame of hope burning bright. There lies the true essence of pujo. There is always hope.

Also, I know not everyone celebrates pujo but it is still a good ideal which can be found in any festival if you are optimistic enough. I'm kinda glad Avantika chose to start writing on it...
